Abstract. Before 1949 China’s industry operated with a fragmented patchwork of foreign standards that severely limited component interchangeability and crippled coordination in the planned economy. Drawing on archival records from the Russian State Archive of the Economy (RGAE), the First Automotive Works (FAW), and published Chinese documentary collections, this paper provides the systematic analysis of how Soviet aid under the “156 Projects” (1950–1960) transplanted the GOST standardisation system into China. The study demonstrates that (1) standards were transferred through three channels: extensive translation of Soviet normative documents, large-scale training programs for Chinese specialists, and the supply of thousands of equipment sets with embedded technical conditions; (2) Chinese engineers actively adapted GOST to local contexts via material substitution and climate adjustments, generating enterprise standards (FQB) and branch standards (JB); and (3) these efforts culminated in the creation of the State Standardisation Administration (1956) and the first national GB standards (1958), the vast majority of which retained Soviet prototypes. The paper concludes that this was not passive borrowing but an active institutional transplantation with creative localization, laying the technological foundation for China’s industrialisation.
