Аннотация. Измерения, которые мы используем сегодня, появились не на пустом месте. Каждое из них имеет долгую историю создания, использования, а иногда и исчезновения. Их путь начинается с доисторических людей и продолжается по сей день. Некоторые древние измерения все ещё с нами – например, фут или миля, в то время как другие были полностью забыты. Давайте отправимся в это путешествие и выясним, какие единицы измерения использовались в Древней Месопотамии, Древнем Египте, Римской империи и в Европе за тысячи лет до нашей эры и по сей день. Мы рассмотрим, что они означали, как соотносились друг с другом, для каких задач использовались и как менялись с течением времени.

The history of units of measurement: from primitive people to modern times

Abstract. Measurements that we use today did not appear out of nowhere. Each of them has a long history of creation, use, and sometimes disappearance. Their journey begins with prehistoric humans and continues to this day. Some ancient measurements are still with us – such as the foot or the mile, while others have been completely forgotten. Let’s explore this journey and find out which units were used in Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire, and in Europe from thousands of years B.C. to the present day. We will look at what they meant, how they related to each other, what tasks they were used for, and how they changed over time.
